Walks Programme

There are two official walks this year … High Cup Nick (B+), led by the hapless Mr.McAvoy … and Brampton (B/C), led by the highly talented Mr.Anderson. Meet up at the fountain at 10:00 – Vinnie (0797 904 2058).
I have compiled a range of walks that could be of interest(?) and have listed below …  copies (1:25 000 map) of the route available.

~

‘A’ Walk “Dufton Circular via Great Dun Fell” TTW - Great Dun Fell

This walk aims to get onto Great Dun Fell to see its mysterious radar station. The route up and down will be via conventional tracks and paths, whilst on the fells though things take on a sudden turn … to become far from conventional! This is crammed packed with navigational obstacles. The terrain is challenging and for experienced ‘A’ walkers only. Knowledge of map & compass essential.
STATS: 14.5 miles / 3107′ ascent & descent / zenith 2629′ (way above mountain height!)

‘B plus’ Walk “Dufton Circular via High Cup Nick” TTW - High Cup Nick Summit

You can’t come all this way without seeing one of Britain’s true scenic wonders … High Cup Nick. This route is my variation, forming a circular route that explores the eastern rim (and well away from the crowds!). Please ensure you bring plenty of supplies and some navigation know-how is required.
STATS: 9.5 miles / 1755′ ascent & descent / zenith @ 1967′

~

‘B minus’ Walk – “Dufton Circular via Appleby”TTW - Flakebridge Woods

A full-on stroll through dense woodlands, across rolling fields and along quiet tracks and country lanes. This is an intriguing and mysterious treat into the county’s capital town … plenty of pubs to explore before trying to navigate back along a maze of mischief … not so easy with a pint or two inside you is it!!! Appleby roughly signifies the halfway point, option to return by taxi(?)
STATS: 10 miles / 1175′ ascent & descent / zenith @ n/a

~

‘B minus’ or ‘C’ Walk “Dufton Circular via Brampton” TTW - Bluebells

This is a mellow and relaxed stroll that incorporates the best, and most secret, assets this area has to offer. Ancient woodlands, babbling brooks, pretty villages, Roman roads, flower-rich meadows and even haunted forests! There is a choice to enjoy a picnic or indulge in a pub lunch. The route is a ‘B’ walk, but a shortened version (equating to a ‘C’ walk is available after the lunch stop.
STATS: 9.5 or 7 miles / 996′ or 685′ ascent & descent / zenith @ n/a

~

‘C’ or ‘E’ Walk “Appleby Circular via Hoff”TTW - Appleby Castle

A relaxed stroll over gently rolling fields and alongside some picturesque waterways.
The area covered is steeped in history … and throws up one or two unexpected surprises(???)!
Option to shorten the walk.
STATS: 8.75 or 7 miles / 773′ or 607′ ascent & descent / zenith @ n/a

The gates of Appleby Castle are now open … visitors are allowed to wander at their own pace around the grounds.
Woodland, riverside and moat & inner bailey walkways have been re-instated … making for a stunning stroll. Ground steep and uneven in parts, stout footwear essential.

WALK RENDEZ-VOUS ~ the Saturday walks are 10:00 at the iconic village fountain
Appropriate CLOTHING & FOOTWEAR requiredpack waterproofs / the ground should be parched and becks very low.
PACKED LUNCH ~ required on all walks, unless you are having a pub lunch at Brampton, Appleby or Hoff / ensure you bring plenty of fluids in hot weather.
There are very limited TOILET FACILITIES (Appleby town & Brampton pub only)
DOGS ~ are allowed on all but the Great Dun Fell ‘A’ walk (Open Access restrictions … it is to do with the grouse!). They MUST be kept on short leads on pasture land/check your accommodation for their policy on dogs/taxis tend to permit them
WEATHER ~ the fell above Dufton is prone to thick hill fogs and fierce winds that induce a terrible “shrieking” noise (Helm Wind). In ancient times it was called ‘Fiend’s Fell’ and is believed to be the haunt of evil spirits … still want come???!!! (it’s actually a collision of warm and cold airstreams from either side of the Pennines).
